Los Angeles Art Association is proud to present 4 solo exhibitions on September 13, 2025 by S.P. Harper, Aileen Imperatrice, Fiana Kumpan and Tom Lasley. All shows run through October 17, 2025.

The diamond is not simply a formal foil for S. P. Harper; it is a subject in its own right, a signifier rich in connotation steeped in cultural (and political, and religious) history, a marker at once so exalted – by assessment -- and so trivialized – by association – that its classic forms have come to represent both its ancient power and its modern ubiquity. This is arguably true of all faceted gems, but the diamond is (still) considered the rarest, the apex gemstone, valued the highest and imbued with the most extra-mineral associations. Diamonds represent luxury, a social value, but actually present elegance, an aesthetic measure. In her most recent series, the Oracles of Effulgence, Harper drives home this bifurcation/resolution of image and object by endowing her paintings, objects, and painted objects with phosphorescence. Yes, the Oracles glow in the dark – an effect, a sensation at once conceptually ludicrous and perceptually glorious. Such luminescence fools no one in the age of the digital spectacle; but its last-century magic suffuses throughout its seductive glow, not simply radiating a flamboyant allure, but inspiring a pervasive nostalgia. . What our mind remembers in dreams and reality is mostly selective, oftentimes protective. Our cognitive dissonance continues as we accumulate our memories. Like a patchwork in fine fog, there are things that come forward of others and we are left with outlines of our life spotted with the colors of our emotions endured. With Aileen Rodriguez Imperatrice’s new series Selective Memory, she permitted herself to completely embrace her intuitive nature, allowing an opportunity to apply line and color, ultimately connecting with a truly fluid process. Fiana Kumpan’s whimsical and subversive solo exhibit Are we alone? Aliens, mutants and visitors revisits her childhood devotion to science fiction books with a series of works featuring vivid color, surreal imagery and subversive themes. Whether creating paintings or sculptures, Kumpan’s subjects are mystical creatures from another world, fantastic figures stepping out from the pages of a futuristic fairy tale. She would like to think that friendly aliens will come to Earth to help to save our planet, to help our nation to eliminate hatred, hunger, poverty, pandemics, injustice, dirty politics and global warming. Tom Lasley’s exhibit DioramaDrama explores how Queer people are often forced to grow up playing a public version that sacrifices authenticity. The benefit of hiding behind a false self can be the minimization of humiliation and emotional pain; the downside is a disconnection from our true selves and how we really feel. Looking back on the past, Lasley sees that the primary task of his adult life has been re-acquainting himself with the spontaneous, exuberant boy he was growing up Catholic in the repressive suburbs of the early 1960’s. This work represents that integration. CLICK HERE TO VIEW AND PURCHASE ARTWORK BY TOM LASLE
