Artist Statement

I have always found it difficult to write or speak about art, a topic that is fundamentally visual and emotional.  I often have a similar difficulty reading and understanding what others have written about art.  In my case, the imagery emerges largely from the manipulation of media.  Whether I am working with paint, drawing tools or collage, my process involves repeated adjustment and correction of the image while attempting to move toward something that is authentic.   I want the mark of human touch to be apparent, and I attempt to capitalize on accidents and traces of previous marks.   Whether the subject is representational or abstract, I generally do not begin with a preconceived idea of what the finished work will become.   It simply evolves and changes as it proceeds.  For me, the paper or canvas is an arena that contains the history of a struggle to achieve an outcome of value
