Artist Statement
My paintings are made of layer upon layer of shape, color, and texture. The shapes and colors are derived from everyday experiences. Through the process of building up layers of shape, color and texture, the surfaces change, the shapes break down and the colors blend, creating new forms. Each layer is a record of it’s own making – a series of decisions over time. Good and bad decisions are made and all parts contribute to the overall whole.
It is through this combination of color/shape/texture that meaning can be attempted. The meaning remains open ended. It is about the search, the means are the end. Not the meaning, but the attempt.
In life, the continual build up of experience peppers our understanding of life, more layers of experience makes for a richer life. So too in my paintings, the building up of layers creates the paintings themselves.
