Richard S. Chow
Artist Statement
Richard S. Chow is an award-winning fine art photographer based in Los Angeles, California. He has widely exhibited in solo and juried exhibits across the U.S. His work has been internationally published and is featured in several private and public collections, most recently in March 2017 by American Hotel in Los Angeles.
His interest in photography began during his formative years in Hong Kong. Over a decade ago, it evolved into a focus on fine art portfolios of aesthetic, documentary and conceptual images. Technical precision and composition remain the hallmarks of his work, but Richard continues to experience and examine all aspects of the artistic medium including homemade shooting devices, film, phone, and high tech digital cameras.
An acclaimed artist, he has been recognized with many awards including four years in a row (2013-2016) by Lucie Foundation’s IPA International Photography Awards. Recently in December 2016, Richard was honored with a gold, silver and bronze award from TIFA (Tokyo International Foto Awards) for three different portfolios. Solo exhibits include Cause Gallery in Chinatown Art District, and Gallery Presents (Phantom Gallery) in Hawthorne, CA. During 2017, Richard exhibits in two solo shows - Gallery 417 at Metro 417 in DTLA, and the Neutra Institute Gallery & Museum in Silver Lake, CA.
Richard is represented by Gallery 825 (LA Art Association), Gloria Delson Contemporary Arts Gallery, and Beyond The Lines Gallery. He is a producer/curator for global OPEN SHOW (Los Angeles Chapter), a non-profit who provides a forum for dialog between the public, artists, galleries and collectors. In February 2017, Richard produced his first curatorial exhibit Common Threads. The show was sponsored by both Art Share LA, and MOPLA Month of Photography LA.
A few years back, when Richard was not as busy creating art work and exhibiting, he offered his left- brained talents to serve as Vice-chair, then Chairman of the Board for the nonprofit Create Now, whose mission is to help youth finds their voices through arts mentoring and education. He is a graduate of California State University and resides in a Northern Los Angeles suburb with his wife and son. At times one can find him pretending to be a chef, but really he just likes to eat (and drink wine).
Artist Statement for URBANSCAPE
My photography often deals with the notion of human conditions, their symbiotic relationship with nature, landscapes, culture and ultimately a study on individualism and how we see the world around us.
Urbanscape is a series with a back drop of built environment that combines my enthusiasm for design and aesthetics. I strive to show how architecture and its forms can be re-imagined within a modern expressionism. Although there is usually lack of human components in these images, its presence is projected and perceived in the eyes of the viewer.
One of my goals is capturing unique structures where the form and lines influence the architecture and the landscape it inhabits, imbuing it with personality. I strive to capture the resurgence of abstract modernism with urban space, and to create images with dynamic energy.
