Artist Statement
I have always been interested in the distance between people, the separateness that can exist in relationships. Physical and emotional space between people can be complicated; people can inhabit very different realities even when they share the same space. To explore this, I paint narratives where the figures seem to be alone in their own worlds; unaware of each other’s presence. Sometimes I will use a diptych or a triptych to make the separation more literal. Use of scale is another way in which I explore this. Subtle body language reveals hidden tensions. The images I am drawn to are ones that spark memories from my past and conflicts from the present. These images are inspired by personal and family photographs, and public images that conjure up emotional narratives that I know to be personal but believe to be universal.
