Artist Statement
Larry Brownstein is an artist and a photographer. He came to photography through a love of travel and is a photojournalist and a portrait photographer.
He has utilized his technical background and his experience as a portrait photographer to move in the direction of digital montage.
deFace is a series of montage images that utilize everyday, slick images - whether his own or from advertising - and treats them as raw material to be twisted, distorted, overlayed, filtered, etc., until they become surreal and acquire a meaning greatly divorced from the original images.
Brownstein's montage process relies on both careful preparation as well as trusting his intuition. The preparation is in the search for and organizing of images to be used in the montages. The intuition is in the trusting of the creative pull to see which images may work together of all the numerous choices.
