Artist Statement
Gina Chiao
A Chinese-American artist who grew up in a patriarchal society, "girls are to be seen not to be heard". She turned herself into an observer. The desire to express her thoughts and feelings is like cracks in a dam. She found the outlet in creating hand-built ceramic sculptures, paintings, and writing in the United States.
The most memorable event in her career as a visual artist was participating in The Salon ‘Automne, a group-juried art exhibition held annually at Grand Palace in Paris in 2015. Later Impressed by Japan’s unglazed pottery, Ms. Chiao was accepted for a month-long residency and traveled to Bizen Province to learn firsthand how century-old Bizenware is created.
In the post-pandemic period and with the loss of her both parents, Ms. Chiao struggled to face mortality and transformed it into a creative force. Her ceramic work has become more vibrant and colorful. She traded her glazes for acrylic paint to create variegated multi-colors to augment their seductive power.
Besides group exhibitions globally, Ms. Chiao’s work has been collected by city museums and art appreciators. She relentlessly works long hours to polish her skills. We can expect her childhood-repressed emotions to blossom into colors found in ceramics and paintings. !
