Artist Statement

In my work I utilize domestic remnants to contemplate a human connection to the natural world and subsequently to one another. I integrate these craft materials such as sewing patterns, needlework instructions, glitter, wallpaper, wrapping paper and fabric into my mixed media collages like brush strokes or lines. Similar to synthetic cubism, the collage materials I use are absorbed into the composition while simultaneously referring to their original use. These items are doing triple duty, in most cases, by alluding to their primary purpose, interpreting natural forms and providing me with a platform in which to recognize traditional women’s crafts. The four seasons are employed as a substructure to categorize this physical matter that signifies the home and to imbue nature while referring to cyclical time. This, in turn, evokes the possibilities of transformation. My use of anatomical imagery refers to the life cycle of the human body and represents the body within the domain of home and nature.
