Artist Statement
During quarantine times and well before them, I have found much satisfaction strolling through my neighborhood. I prefer to walk at dusk, about the time when folks turn on their lights to compensate for descending darkness, but before they remember to close their curtains. If I am lucky, the curtains stay open, even as night settles around us. I treasure these secret glimpses into people’s homes and lives, seeing their color choices, the art on their walls, and sometimes the people themselves. It occurred to me that I could paint these intimate scenes on intentionally small canvases, creating a glowing portal by which viewers could step into another’s life. Especially during a time of isolation, the idea of being outside looking in has felt particularly moving. It is my goal to capture some of that poignancy in my series of dusk and nighttime paintings.
