Artist Statement

I am sensitive to the environment and the emotion stirred by a particular environment. Sometimes that environment is external, for example, the tide pools of California or the dark streets of Edinburgh. Sometimes that environment is internal, for example, the obsession that is lust or the pressure of time and approaching death.

Emotion is layered and complex and comes in many colors and textures. My paintings are layered and complex, taking up to six months to complete. Layers create depth and movement. Contrasting texture, contrasting luminosities, found objects, text, nontraditional material—I use whatever is available to support and enhance the message.
