Artist Statement

Self-portraits by BlackManWhiteBaby create a narrative that brings to light the complexities of being a Queer, African-American man living under overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination and disadvantage. Through utilizing racial and sexual stereotypes as part of the imagery and playing with their meaning, BMWB compels the viewer to explore their personal relationship to race, politics, American history, childhood trauma, gender and sexual identity. The use of non-binary characters allows BMWB to express beyond the imposed limitations of masculinity and femininity while showing that the black body is one of the most important figures in American History. Works by BMWB have been featured in LA Weekly, Los Angeles Blade, OUT Magazine, and most recently on the FOX television series, Empire, Season 5, 2019.
