Anne Varick
Artist Statement
Born in New York City in 1940, Anne Varick (Lauder) is a classically trained sculptor, painter and draughtsman. Her work is featured in private collections in Los Angeles, Aspen and Palm Springs.
In 1977 Anne had her first west coast exhibition at the Quenzler Art Studio in La Jolla with a election of her large and small-scale sculpture in cast bronze, marble and pewter. In his exhibition review, Richard Reilly, art critic for The San Diego Union, wrote:
“Varick’s figures combine naturalism with a certain degree of primitivism and remind one of Henry Moore’s characteristic human forms…some artists register only deformities, Varick registers beauty…one hopes it will be the beginning of a distinguished career…”
- The San Diego Union, February 20, 1977, p. 79.
Now in her 80s, Anne works exclusively in the digital medium, using programs such as Photoshop, Procreate and Topaz Labs to manifest her ideas. Often using one of her previous creations as a starting point - be it a pen and ink sketch, a pastel drawing or photograph - Anne takes these relatively simple images to new heights with her digital tools. A disciplined artist who “draws” daily, Anne delights in creating new work that pushes boundaries.
There is variety in her images - no two works are the same - and her sculpting background and signature style remain in evidence throughout. Abstracted motifs and geometric forms often deriving from nature – birds, butterflies, fish, shells, waves or orbs – are often in metamorphosis, being and becoming, moving through a process of transformation, a reminder of the constantly of change.
A resident of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, Anne is also a member of the San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild. She recently received two awards - first place and honorable mention - for Tooling Around (2023) Nature’s Frolic (2022).
