Alexandro Zamora

Artist Statement

Alexandro Zamora is a first generation LatinX-American artist based in Los Angeles, California. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Art from the University of Santa Cruz, California in 2011, Alex moved to Chicago, IL to attend the School of the Art Institute for his graduate degree. While the school was impressive, a series of family tragedies along with a lack of personal connection to the photography program led Alex to move back to his hometown to begin his career as an independent artist.

In traditional art spaces I have seen so many of my fellow Latinx artists only allowed to tell stories that repackage our experience as minorities for an external, white audience. The tension between wanting to create interesting images without making art that trades on the struggles of my community is a driving factor in my work.
